The Art And Science of Prosthetics

Orbital/Eye Prosthetics
Adding lashes for an orbital prosthesis is one of the final details for completion

Orbital prosthetics are defined as when there is a loss of not only the eye, but surrounding tissue as well. An ocular prosthesis refers to the eye replacement itself, with surrounding tissue intact. This distiction matters in that a patient missing only the eye may be treated by an ocularist (typically board certified, and a more common clinician to be found across a given state), however when surrounding tissue is missing, it is typically beyond their scope, requiring an anapastologist or facial prosthetist. Often anaplstologists are qualified to do both the ocular component and its surrounding prosthesis. The fabrication and fitting are included in the scope of practice in their certification exams.
